Reminiscing 2012: Porter Robinson – Language

This sensory explosion masquerading as an EDM track was a ‘mushroom cloud laying mofo’ at festivals in the year 2012. When we look back, with nostalgia, at this excellent year for house music, no song will bring back the memories quite like ‘Language’ by Porter Robinson.

Vocals in electronic music has been a recurring and polarizing issue. And rightly so, because there is a fine fine line between emotive or uplifting and cheesy. It is really easy to mess things up. I believe that meaningful vocals, when lightly sprinkled in, can add a lot of value to a production. Ultimately, however, the electronic melodies, riff and bass need to carry the track. ‘Language’ is an excellent example of vocals done right, as mid track things come a screeching halt, and we are treated to this sublime verse:

Give me release
Let the waves of time and space surround me
Yeah
Cause I need room to breathe
Let me float back to the place you found me
I’ll be ok

Calvin Harris feat Florence Welch – Sweet Nothing

After a couple of sub-par, sell out productions, the Calvin Harris we know and love has returned with a vengeance. His remix of Florence and the Machine’s bedazzling ‘Spectrum’ was a beast of a track, and now he teams up once again with Florence Welch on the magnificent ‘Sweet Nothing’. Florence’s lustrous vocals over Harris’ electric riff makes for one hell of a banger.



Pro Raver’s "Fly Off The Treadmill" September Special

I have been consumed by Deniz Koyu’s new behemoth of a track lately. When it dropped at Lavo last weekend, I almost jumped through roof. And when it  played on my iPod this evening, I damn near flew off the treadmill! In that spirit, I have decided to create a new series where I will introduce you to hard hitting electro and progressive jams that are perfect for your ‘Running’ playlist. I was witness to when this song was introduced to the world, when Alesso dropped this at EDC – NY.

Keep an eye out folks because we’re going to be doing an entire segment on Alesso in this space. Why? Because he is the best in the business right now. Everything he touches turns to gold.

The second the xylophone (yes, xylophone!) drops you know that Morgan Page is on to something special here. This track is an exhilarating journey, with equal parts magic and bass.

In Page’s words “In The Air” is about capturing the excitement of being in the moment.

This breathtaking track, with haunting vocals, is a must have for your music library.
